Exodus Quartet
Exodus Quartet began not as a project, but as a group of like-minded individuals organizing parties, led by Eric Hilton.
Focusing on 70s funk, bossa nova, mod, salsa, Latin jazz, reggae, and hip-hop, Eric Hilton and Farid Ali founded the Exodus nightclub in Washington, D.C. From the summer of 1991 to the summer of 1993, Friday nights at the club became a gathering place for a diverse crowd of interesting music lovers. The club's uniqueness is legendary, and its aesthetic still lives on in Eric and Farid's next club, The Eighteenth Street Lounge.
The idea for Exodus Quartet was sparked by Eric's desire to recreate the club atmosphere in music, and today the group has become one of the most talented and promising in the dance club scene. Way Out There, their debut album, was recorded three years after Eric decided to focus on producing and arranging.
In Eric's own words, this album is "a journey beyond the ordinary, a unique blend of musical forms from both past and present." Lyrical brass themes, interesting hip-hop drum fills and rhythms, and a clever use of traditional jazz instruments are featured. It's worth noting that, unlike classic acid jazz, there are no modern, purely electronic sounds here, just the drum loops hint at the existence of computer-based music technology.
